hi is the 10th or 13th as mentioned in the events.
I am hoping to travel to one of the meets. However it is a 500 mile round trip for me (both locations almost identical distances) so does anyone have any views as to which would be the better venue? Am I correct in saying there are more deer at Richmond than at Bradgate? As far as travel is concerned I suppose Richmond would be the easiest as it is almost one road (M4) all the way for me.
Robert
Hi Robert, I'm not sure about Bradgate, Richmond has 300 Red Deer and 350 Fallow, The walking is less I think as you can drive right into the park. Best of all, the Car park we use (Pen Ponds) is right next to the bacon roll/burger van .
We will be meeting at around 7.30 as the park doesn't officially open till then although early birds may still be able to gain access as some of the gates are opened earlier.
HTH,
Phil

Will be at Bradgate the weekend after as at Westonbirt for the autumnal tree display on the 10th.
I have been to both places and found that both have plenty of willing models but I prefer the backdrop to Bradgate. Have fun.

If the travel distance is too great to get the the "big two" perhaps alternative venues to consider are
Tatton Park, Mere, Cheshire - Red Deer - just north J19 M6
Dunham Massey House (National Trust), - Fallow Deer - just north J7 M56
Lyme Park (Manchester District Council) - Red Deer - Just west of New Mills on A6 W Manchester
All three venues are deer parks but the deer tend to be a lot more challenging than at the Big two (perhaps not Dunham Massey House I've only beenthere once many moons ago) and you won't get early entry for twilight shooting at any of these locations
For members in Wales/SW regions
Dyrham House - Fallow deer, just south of J18 M4 holds a very large herd, but they can disappear into the greater grassland areas of the park rather than stay in the woodland near the house, and it is a huge trog around the parkland for little reward.... again entry timing restrictions
I may make this a weekend of Westonbirt on Saturday and Dyrham on Sunday but my arrangements are not finalised yet.
Whatever you do have a great weekend photographing deer!
Another place that might be worth visiting for Welsh- or West Country-based photographers is MARGAM PARK near Port Talbot. Plenty of fairly approachable Red and Fallow Deer, plus the rare Pere David's Deer. For a few photos taken there, see HERE, and scroll down a bit.
For info, (further to Jeremy's suggestion) I visited Margam the other day and there was no sign of the rut. In fact I couldn't even find any Reds at all. Normally they are out on the open field at the east of the park but all I saw there was the Pere David herd and some fallow. There are a good number of fallow around in all the usual places.
