Normally some good Fall Color weather means cold and yes wind also. But will our CA Aspens have any leaves left on them after such a storm? I am thinking maybe the trees with the greener leaves will still have something left as well as the areas which may be a bit more sheltered from the onslaught - possibly the streams and more intimate/hidden settings.
Hopefully Corey or someone else can checkout the aftermath and assess the situation. Our weekend trip may consist of finding places which didn't get stripped bare.
*Edit: on a interesting side note it looks like the winds around June Lake are only predicted to get gusts up to 55MPH. Perhaps the geography of that region is a bit more protected or the storm will be more intense to the south around Bishop. Hmm...
BTW, got the time off work and I'm going regardless! I will be stoked just to get up into the mtns.

I guess I could sit at home and wait to hear what it's like.. .
I'm sure the trees can handle it (they've been doing it forever) except the really dry ones that change earlier than usual. I'm going up reguardless as well.
Yes Steve... but the trees don't really care if they lose their yellow leaves... they're done with them anyways We on the other hand, do care about those leaves!
That said... don't sell yourself short... beautiful forest carpets with yellow leaves and bare aspens would provide ample opportunity for photos IMO. There's always a unique shooting opportunity, you just have to find it, recognize it, and take advantage of it!

That is quite the change in weather. We had little to no winds this past weekend.

I should note that the high winds Derek mentions are peak-ridge winds at high altitude. They are being driven by 115 knot jet core. It will be windy in the canyons; 20-25 mph, with higher gusts to near 50 mph in the Lee Vining area Tuesday night. Things calm down beginning Wednesday morning thru Friday..
Another front is forecast fhis coming weekend. The pattern will be cool, with gusty winds expected. The precip will be light, however. Things will fair up on Monday 10/5.
I am headed over to Lee Vining tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. i am really looking forward to geing in the montains! WaHoo!
Be prepared for cold and windy weather, kids. Be safe.

Well,
I can tell you we have really strong winds here in Monterey right now. I am looking out the window at victory at sea white capped conditions. And the trees are really moving as well.
It looks like they actually have some small aspens in the cam's view which are moving pretty good in the wind.

According to the Mammoth main Lodge weather station. 40 mph was as high as the wind got there. From the webcam although it's dark conditions at June Lake appear to be little wind right now. No movement in trees observable.

was up bishop canyon yesterday afternoon 'til sunset, a decent one. was snowing lightly above 8700' or so and sticking above 10K. Wasn't too bad for wind, some gusts above 20-30 w/ breezy conditions. some of the leaves at NL above the lake are starting to fall off the trees as other locations as well. Same for the south fork side, many trees shedding. Many of the trees that are past peak w/ leaves are showing a lot of dark brown/black spots. this is all above 8500' or so. most areas still green below this el. pretty breezy last night in bishop. hard to say how windy it was up the canyon.
Re: the wind speed forecasts, usually when they forecast downslope wind events as this, the speeds are at the mouth of the canyon, especially along 395 around Indy. In the canyon it maybe less, just depends.
Strong winds in Bay Area too. My car this morning, just hours before the planned departure to Lee Vining ... It's not stopping us, of course, just a short delay.

Wow, talk about some strong winds! That photo gives a whole different prespective on Fall Colors.
Glad you are still determined to go. Please update us on conditions if you get a chance.

Although Mammoth WebCams seem to be turned off the June Lake cam is running here:
