Folks,

Rather than append an existing thread that some might not read, I'm starting a new one.

This is turning in to quite the group! Good thing too, we can drop the price of the get-together because of volume discounting! Just kidding, there's no charge for getting together.

As you already know, we'll be meeting around 11am for a meet-n-greet at the Silver Lake picnic area.

Be prepared to unsettled weather!!! Looks like it might not even reach 50 on Sunday and will certainly be around freezing early in the morning.

UPDATE:

For those interested in shooting together Sunday morning, I thought I would put out a general agenda and those who want to join us are welcome.

Sunday 10/4 sunrise: Tentative plan is to meet for sunrise at the Old Marina. See thislink for location; it's just north of the Visitor's Center and 2.3 miles north of the 120/395 junction. At the bottom of the steep grade.

ALTERNATE: It WILL BE COLD and probably WINDY. Last two years I've bagged this location and settled for some hot coffee at Whoa Nellie's Deli.
If you have never been to Mono Lake, you might want to try South Tufa. Everyone should do sunrise there at least once. On Sunday though, be prepared for multiple workshop groups and LOTS of photogs.

Sunday 10/4 morning: The loose plan will be to work the north end of the June Lake Loop between the Grant Lake Inlet and Silver Lake. Preston, Paul and I will likely park at the Aerie Crag Picnic and parking lot early in the morning some time after sunrise.
The Aerie Crag parking area is exactly 7 miles from 395 starting from the north entrance to the loop.

Because Rush creek sits right below a steep and high mountainside, you can work that whole stretch till very late in the morning. Conveniently enough, right before we meet at 11am, just 2miles further down the road.

Regardless of the state of the aspens along the loop, there is lot's to photograph. The summer grasses, rabbit brush, sage and of course along Rush Creek. And if it's cold enough overnight for some frost, well for me at least, is "icing on the cake."

Sunday 10/4 afternoon:

No specific plans. I expect plans will be made during lunch though.

Sunday 10/4 sunset/moonrise: I'm planning on possibly doing sunset (actually the moonrise) on Test Station Road, which is just west of the South Tufa parking area. The moon will rise 30min after sunset, which I'm hoping will be in a colorful earth's shadow. OR clouds would be nice as long as they don't cover the moon. :-)

Again, if you haven't ever been to South Tufa, you may want to actually go down to the water's edge and the tufas. But from the road, you are above the lake it's a much broader, scenic type view.

Saturday night is actually the FULL moon and will rise about 30 min before sunset - that should be a great opportunity as well.

Anyway, rambled enough. We'll see all of you on Sunday and I know I'm looking forward to meeting some new folks!

Oh, the attached image was captured in 1993! One of my very first 4x5's and was taken from the Aerie Crag parking area.

Drive safe and be prepared!

Lon

edit: BACKUP plan: Worse case if the weather ruins the plans.... we can meet back at Whoa Nellie's Deli.

Lon,

Is that image of the "Test Station Road" accurate as far as the moon path & sun path? Also, how was this generated?

Thanks!

Zachary,

The image is just a screenshot from that Photographer's Ephemeris tool that we linked to earlier. If you've installed it you should be able to get the same image. You'll need to play with it, "add a location," etc. It's pretty easy - assuming you've used Google Earth before too.

The image and lines for the sun/moon are accurate as far as I can tell. I've used it a couple other times to position myself for a moonrise and it works. It even accounts for elevation as well I believe. But in the case of the moonrise over Mono, the time and angles should be good and elevation won't matter since the moon is pretty much coming off the horizon.

Let me know if you have any trouble.

Wow, I can't wait to install that program tonight and give it a shot. It's exactly what I was hoping for.

Thank you!
