Green Woodpecker
Just after been down to pool No 3. Awkward exposure with sun on the stump from the left and the bird in shade at the back. Am starting to get these (including adults) down regularly now at all the pools.

It looks like he is having a bit if a bad hair day! Difficult exposure handled really well John. It's a shame about the nails as they do detract from the overall image.

You have handled the lighting conditions well, John. I agree with Robert about the nails, but a bit difficult to do anything about that when the bird is actually there!

Thanks both. You may have noticed the nails in the same stump in other shots. I,ve been using the stump for about 20 years and they would have to be sawn off. No big deal but I wondered what the reaction would be.
Thanks for looking .
Cheers

He's a scruffy looking so'n so John, but you've got him in some nice semi shadow so all the detail shows nicely :wavey:

Hi John

A nice shot in difficult lighting, the nails are part of it no reason to move them.

John

A very nice shot and a great example of using harsh light to advantage.

I've only ever seen these searching for worms on lawns.

Very nice John. Nails don't bother me as it's just great to see them shot off the ground.

Not a bad record shot, but those nails should be removed, which is easily done, even if they nee to be sawn off as you say. Just removing them and rotating the stump would surfice, afer all you have had twenty years to sort it.

Will be posting a reply to your comments in the "Starling" post, later today.

I'm envious too as I've only seen one - at the top of a tree with binoculars. I have to say I like the simple honesty in your shots John - the nails are superb!
