Living on the Edge ( Day before CANP Gathering )
The conditions up Bishop Creek Saturday were as forecast downslope winds gusting to 50 MPH. The color I captured the weekend before behind North Lake had disappeared, blown away. Smaller, lighter photographers were flying past me and as they went by I advised them "Eat more." Did some prostelyzing spreading the gospel of NPN and CANP with the Photogs I spoke with. I gave up on the North Fork and headed over to the South Fork where conditions were marginally better. Near Table Mountain the road swings close to a granite wall where I captured this image. I like the juxtaposition of the twisted pines clinging to the rocks rooted in cracks with the changing Aspens. Good granite is also nice. Olympus E-500 ISO 100 F11 1/200. The dynamic range was challenging in post processing.

Paul,

I like this and think you did a great job in handling the exposure range. Nice title too as the juniper? are literally living "on the edge" and this captures that nature story nicely. And since I do think the story is about the juniper - plus the granite and color, I do think you could crop the bottom - almost enough to make a square format. You still have the nicely lit and colored aspen on the right, but personally I don't think you need the aspen in the shadow nor the brightest one in the LRC. That's just my opinion though. I think this works well and captures the environment of the Eastern Sierra well.

Nice meeting you and everyone this weekend. Thanks for attending.

The mixture of granite and twisted pines definitely depicts the typical scene one would expect to see and enjoy amongst the Sierra. I just think the light is too harsh here to enjoy the subtleties to be found in the detail. Sounds like you all still had a good time considering the windy/snowy conditions.
