We were able to find eight ringed and three spotted salamanders tonight in the pouring rain, along with a brown snake, a pygmy rattler, and countless frogs. I never knew there was so much activity on the road in the rain
The salamanders may be out again tomorrow night if we get more rain. I can see this could become addictive, and that I need to work more with flash.

Great! Glad you were able to see them, even with all the rain. I would love to see you guys out doing this. I bet that would be hard to explain to a passer-by! "Uhhhh, were looking for salamanders, in the dark, in the rain...ya, thats it!" Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking when they see me out laying in the grass or in some crazy position taking pictures....Probably "crazy lady"!

Really cool Bill. Souds like it was a sucessful evening. The spotted one is my favorite. Isn't it fun to do new things in the outdoors.
I saw some sort of spotted salamander while camping below Twin Falls at Richland last night. I don't think he looked like yours though.

I'm surprised you has such good results! This work be interesting to capture with a few speedlights in sync to eliminate any shadows, or with a off camera cable and an umbrella or soft box.
Rattlesnakes at night...terrifying!

Very cool! Great salamander images and the rattler is amazing. With the cooler evenings was he trying to stay worm or preying on salamanders?
