Autumn Train
Here's a shot from late September of the Durango & Silverton train making its way through the Animas Gorge. While the backlighting made shooting the train itself difficult, it sure made the aspen pop!

Looking at this makes you wonder how the San Juans aren't choked with smoke when you consider there are three trains running every day during the summer months!

Nice. Despite the backlighting, you've pulled out quite a bit of shadow detail. The curve of the train in this comp works out well too.

Nice Guy - The backlight is really making the pines on the right glow as well.

As for the backlight you did what you had to to get the shot at the right moment. I really like this shot. Maybe you can reduce the backlight effect a little by selecting the the farthest mountain layer in the upper right corner and reducing the blue/cyan in color balance. If you use Gaussian blur it shouldn't effect the pines that are sticking up into that region. Assuming your using PS that is.

Your comment reminds of how heavy the smoke is, and how it falls back onto all the people riding in the open windows cars, and the smell of fireworks in the air.

Guy,

Awesome shot...I've wanted to get a similar shot for a long time. I agree with the others...it seems the backlighting is a little harsh and on my computer, it looks like the colors may be off a little. Otherwise, terrific!

I like this a lot. It really conveys the mood.

The backlit aspen are outstanding and really make this work...way to recognize it and shoot it. I sometimes find it difficult to see anything but glare when I look towards the sun.

Terrific shot Guy

Very nice shot. Considering the overall photo, the backlighting on the train is of little consequence, IMHO.

What a view ... and perfect processing, Guy.

A truly excellent composition!
You did a good job of 'development', especially considering the tricky light situation you had to deal with.
So, tell me a story on how you were able to get this fine shot in the first place.
