Does anyone use over the lens products such as Lally Cap to set the white balance? Does it work and how? Recently saw article on it and I don't know if it is a gimick or real.

I've got no experience with the Lally Cap, but i'm an avid user of the Expodisc.
It has really helped me through some tough (all sorts of different and mixed light) situations with great results.

The expodisc is really straightforward in its use,
you just hold it in front of the lens, snap a picture of the scene you want to white balance.
set your camera to custom white balance and select the snap you just took
and you're done !

I am cheap! I use a standard coffee filter and usually it works just fine. Looks funny in my bag of equipment, but it works. I would probably consider the Lally cap if the reviews are really good and by a reputable source such as yourself, Greg.

I haven't tried it because it's "guilt by association" and I'm skeptical by nature. The Expodisc folks were playing product placement games at a couple of tradeshows, essentially giving them to people free if they'd go out and pimp them. I must have had six different people stop me in a week to show me this new product they'd bought and how great it was, and which booth on which aisle to find it. Might work and might not, but the sales tactic really turned me OFF.

The Expodisc is always in my bag. I love it.

I'm a notorious cheapskate when it comes to camera accessories. I also use a white coffee filter and a rubber band. It gives exactly the same results as the Expodisc (checked in the field).

Just aim at the light source, shoot and set your custom white balance.
