In checking my email today I realized it has been just over a year now since I took over the Weekly Challenge Moderator position (seems like just yesterday...)

Just want to thank everyone who has participated over the past year. I've really been impressed by the amount of participation and the enthusiasm everyone brings to that Gallery. The quality of photography just seems to get better and better and every week seems to get that much tougher to pick a winning shot.

The Weekly Challenge is unlike any of the other Galleries, in that pretty much anything goes so long as it is nature photography and meets the theme. So, the criteria for judging the Weekly Pick are slightly different than the other Galleries and I want to be clear about that--

Aside from the 'usual' criteria in judging the photos, which are basically in a nutshell:
1) Composition/balance
2) Technical expertise
3) Originality/creativity
There is a fourth criteria that trumps the other three, all else being equal:
4) How well does the photo meet the theme?

There are so many outstanding entries each week, that criteria #4 often ends up being the deciding factor (well, not counting the occasional deposits to my Swiss bank account )

I look forward to an even better Weekly Challenge Gallery in the coming months and in 2010--hope to see all the old faces and as many new ones as possible! As always, please mail me if you have any suggestions for new Themes, or ways to improve the Gallery.
Thanks again, Folks! :wavey:

Stan, thanks for clarifying the criteria used for judging the Weeking Pick. I didn't even realize that you were making the picks. I'm going to have to start showing some more sand in my photos  Thanks for doing such a great job

Stan: Thanks for doing such a great job over the past year. The Weekly Challenge is a lot of fun and I appreciate the creativity that you and those who suggest themes stimulates. Since I know I'm not eligible for the weekly pick expect no $$$$ coming your way from me but I was hoping you wouldn't have shared my dirty little secret for making selections. Just between you and me, I've started accepting gold bullion instead of cash considering how uncertain the economy is.

Stan, I see my deposit must have cleared! I can truly appreciate the point you're making about the importance of sticking to the challenge criteria. There were a number of more beautiful or striking photos than mine this week but the criteria factor must have tipped the balance. Thank you for choosing my photo and an especially big THANK YOU for all the work and energy you put into the challenge gallery!
