This was taken along the South Fork in an area of intense color. I was shooting directly into the sun so trees were backlit. The whole hillside looked on fire with color. It was pretty nice even for a slow/down season. Can't wait until next year.

Hi Derek
I prefer the vertical version. Both are excellent don't get me wrong, but in the vertical version the lighting seems a little more even. Love the backlit colors either way but on the horizontal version the top right corner area seems a bit too dark. Perhaps, if you could pull out some more detail there. Just my thoughts.

I prefer the vertical also, mainly because I find the upper right in the horizontal version to be a bit empty, throwing off the image's balance IMO. I think the backlight works well here and the contrasts are controlled enough in this exposure that it doesn't appear too harsh. Good work.

Thanks for ideas guys. I started with two basic versions which I had processed from th same raw. And I preferred the one here with the stronger contrast showing some darker areas. But now that you mention it the right corner does look a bit too dark in this version. So I could do some selective lightening of this area while still mainting the contrast in the overall image - kinda like the vertical which is a bit lighter overall.

Even in an off year, you found some good color. Well done, Derek.
Derek, very nice color. Maybe crop in just a touch from the right. I like the way you used the back lighting to bring the colors out. Nicely done. Best Regards.

Nice back lighting Derek. I take it this was on the ridge of the south lake road. Even when contrast is removed you can put it back in there. You might of underexposed a little too much if you can't get the detail back or unfortunately it just might be a little more work.

That vertical version has a nice compositional balance and good mixture of color. I particularly enjoy the rim light on that pine to the right. Well seen and captured!

I too, prefer the verticle, a much tighter composition and the light seems concentrated a bit more, well done.
