....photographing Red Kites with my manual focus 500mm......!!

Hi All,

As you know, just been on a holiday to South Wales, went to Gigrin Farm for the first time. An amazing spectacle, but very hard work too!

Here's one of a very small number of sharp shots from the day, not the best kite picture perhaps, but I liked the way he was looking at me.

Sorry I haven't been around much lately, hopefully will be able to get going again now work getting a bit less hectic.

C and c welcome, thanks for looking!!

Gigrin is amazing isn't it...

This is a very nice image particularly the eye contact... they are not easy with AF so well done with manual focus...

Have they returned to their normal habits? When I was last there in summer they were not coming down till about an hour and a half after the feed was put out as the crows had changed their habits

Hope you had a good holiday...

Great shot especially considering conditions, and looks like you got some good light as well.

As someone who eschews auto focus and much prefers manual I applaud your efforts. It is much more satisfying when an excellent image is captured by your own efforts rather than the camera's. Well done indeed.

I like this very much Dawn. Gigrin is another place on my wishlist....one day.

Super detail in the bird, focusing manually, as difficult as you may have found, it has paid off well!

Thanks all!

Phil - the kites came down almost straight away, and I couldn't believe how many there were, I was so focused (haha) on the main group feeding, that I was suprised when I looked up and there were so many more circling above. Really amazing.

Fran, I hope you get to go some day, its a really amazing sight, I just had to stop shooting and watch for a while.

Thanks for the kind comments guys. :toast:
