I've been playing around with the orton effect (see my Foggy Day post in M&N) and am questioning whether I'm doing it correctly, or if I'm missing someting in the process. What I did was made 2 duplicate layers & turned off (hid) the original. I selected the first copy, which I labeled "background copy", and adjusted the opacity to around 65%. Then I selected the 2nd copy, which I labeled "bright layer" and added gaussian blur (I think around 25 pixels) and bumped up the brightness on this layer. Then to combine the images, I selected "multiply" from the layers dropdown box. The image wasn't as sharp as I would have liked, so I thought it would lend itself to this process. I'm wondering if some of you would share your workflow for ortonizing. I lso tried Darwin Wigget's method where the duplicate copies are selected from image-duplicate instead of layers-duplicate, but then my layers dropdown box is grayed out and I can't select "multiply". I hope you all can understand my ramblings, and thank you in advance your your help

I often have to add sharpening to my Orton images, the process itself softens things a great deal. You can download my free Orton action from here:

Here's another way to do an Orton and it gives you a lot of flexibility in how much blur you want to apply.
1) make a background copy in layers.
2) highlight background copy and select Image-Apply Image and set the blending mode to "screen"
3) highlight the background copy and make another copy of the background
4) make sure that background copy 2 is highlighted and select the blending mode drop down and select multiply
5) highlight the background copy 2 and then select Guassian Blur from Filters.
This will give you you blur tool, and you can select any amout of blur that looks good on your shot. Doing it this way is nice in that you can see the effect of the blur while the Blur tool is open.
