Seems the most vibrant fall color is often in the understory here in the PNW!

That's true, and something that took me a long time to learn, having grown up in New England. West of the mountains, most of the large hardwood trees turn either brown or yellow with brown spots; not very attractive. The nicest fall color in this immediate area, IMHO, is in pine forests with vine maple or brightly colored ground cover.
Of course, once you cross the Cascades to the eastern slopes, conditions change, and you get fall color closer to that in Colorado.
