This lovely young cardinal flew into our storm door full force, and knocked himself silly. I went out to see what the loud bang was, noticed a few small feathers pasted to the glass, and found the cardinal, a young adult male (judging by size) sitting dazed and very still on our camper roof. I called a local lady who rehabs birds. She advised me to watch the bird for about an hour, as he was probably concussed and would fly off when he got his head straight.
This photo and the following were taken right after he hit our door and just before he flew off, a little over an hour later. I noted toward the last that his pupils appeared larger and he was moving his head about, trying to take in his surroundings. I kept a close watch on him (and took a few photos) because we have feral cats in the neighborhood, whose favorite prey are the local birds. I wanted to be sure I could take him to the local bird lady in case he didn't recover. I brought a small tin of water out to him, which he ignored. I pushed it a little closer in case he was having trouble seeing, and he took off like a scalded dog! Thank goodness, he recovered!
