In February of 2010 I am planning a trip to Denpasar, Bali. Wondered if anyone had ever birded in these parts and has any tips about places or trips or guides.
Thanks for any input

Hi May,
It's been many years ago but I have birded in Denpasar, Bali. The ricefields around town contain some waterbirds and other open country species. There are a few Javan Kingfishers around which are a spectacular species. As for guides, you could try birdingpal.org and see if there is anyone listed for Bali. I met my guide by just asking around the hotel and somebody put me in contact with a birder, I don't remember his name it's been so long. If you can arrange a trip to the east coast of Java across the water by ferry, Baluran National Park is spectacular. You can email me if you want more info on that sight.

May,
You might want to look at " A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Indonesia" by Morten Strange. It will probably be avaiable at the bookstore at Jakarta's airport (if you are flying in that way).
Some of the photos are really not good and some of the information is not accurate. I work on Sulawesi (an island to the north of Bali) and have found a bird here that I cannot identify from the book (or the distribution maps might be slightly suspect).
But these are minor critisisms - it is still a useful book.
Enjoy your trip to Bali. Just be careful around stray dogs - rabies is endemic to the island; and use a mosquito repellant - dengue fever is also common.
Regards
