I've started activating the D300s automatic sensor cleaning everytime I change a lens. I notice my images are cleaner when I do this. Is there any downside to this? Is it a big use of battery power?

We do the same thing Dan, and haven't really noticed any decrease in battery longevity. But we have spare batteries and always change them at about half charge, so we might not notice.

I use mine every time I turn the camera on. No difference I can tell in battery longevity. It only takes a 1/2 second or so anyway.

I use it as you do, Dan: from the menu, when I change lenses and sometimes when I think it's time. Actually, I started doing it two times in a row after I noticed some dust spots, and they actually went away. Haven't noticed any effect at all on battery life.

you can do it evrytime you turn off the camera or turn on - not much consumption of battery power.
