Indeed very well done and to Terry Whittaker for his 'Prize of the audience'.. Nice work..

I didn't know about this competition, but will take a more active interest in future years..!

I was also saddened by the image of all the swimmers around that Whale shark..! I know it's reflected in photography of a number of animals across the globe but that really is extreme..

Congrats again Danny..

Is it me, or are a great deal of the images in that comp either the same, or slightly different shots of the stuff that got into WPOTY? Not really saying that in a bad way, just interesting how the same images clean up!

Its the largest Nature photographers gathering in Europe, held once a year in Germany. I have been there many times and it is always very interesting with many famous Pro nature photographers like Frans Lanting, Norbert Rosing, Thomas Mangelsen giving presentations..just to mention a few names.

It also has a large exhibition area with stands for equipment, special nature photography tour operators and publishers.

It is always held in october.

It has always surprised me that similar events have never been held in the United Kingdom.

Congratulations to Terry, Danny and Brian.

Rene, we do have Wild Photos http://www.wildphotos.org.uk/ which is a two day wildlife photography conference held in London. Unsure how long it's been running - was on last year, but this year was the first year I heard about it (went on the saturday, was very good), don't think it's been running that long. Has a few stands, but I quite like the lack of tradeshowness!

I know about that one Greg...to be honest: the Event in Germany is very good in my opinion...and cheaper as well! I dont mind the tradeshowness. The event is a great place to meet other photographers, find out about new places in Europe to go to for some serious nature photography, to hear abut the latest tips.It has a more international feel to it then the UK one...i think.

Hi Rene, the German is very cheap (though given the weakness of the pound, plus the extra travel and accomodation costs I expect it'd end up more expensive). I did prefer the conservation aim of Wild Photos. Hopefully as the UK one grows it'll get cheaper, but the venue, while very good, limits that at the moment.

I can't comment on the German one as I've never been, but was impressed by the number of visitors from the US and non-British Europeans at the UK one, most of the speakers not being from the UK (two speakers on Saturday had interpreters), good to see lots of young people there as well (mostly students I'm assuming).

Some interesting debates - including why UK togs don't 'get together' like wildlife togs on the continent - though no-one mentioned UKNP!

The fact that they're on the same weekend seems either very stupid or a cynical marketing ploy!

Thanks Phil!! Was great to see my picture in amongst so many quality images. I attended the festival in Germany, having been to WildPhotos last year. Overall, the quality of speakers and presentations was quite similar. The GDT festival had at least a couple that were conservation oriented, certainly not less than WildPhotos 2008 anyway. The fact they were on at the same time was a complete coincidence apparently and the organisers said they would be in contact with WildPhotos next time to make sure it doesn't happen again. There were no agencies there but getting my camera cleaned for free by Canon was a bonus! Around half the talks were in English (translated into German during the talk). Unfortunately, the talks in German were not translated into English, which they might need to address if they want this to be a truly international festival. Of course a good photo transcends language, but hearing the background story is the point of going to a presentation. The tickets were much cheaper than WildPhotos. And the local beer was very good  Overall, I'd recommend anyone here to go along.
