Crocodile versus a Wildebeest
Hello,

Something different...

We visited Kenya in August this year, to witness the wildebeest migration at the Masai Mara reserve, and hopefully to see some river crossings where the wildebeest and zebra flood across the river...

We were fortunate, and lucky enough too, to witness a chase and ensuing battle between several crocodiles and one ultimately doomed wildebeest.

This is one picture of many that I took during an epic two hour episode (with mixed and hard to describe feelings afterwards)...

Powerful image here. I witnessed the same emotions in Zambia a few years ago and it really did make me appreciate nature in a way that has always stayed with me. The wounds on the back add to the story. I wonder if a bit of burning on the back of the wildebeest might make it pop a bit more.

Well caught David. It is very difficult to watch something like this without feeling at least some sympathy for the victim no matter how hard we convince ourselves that it is a natural phenomenon.

I would say lucky you, as I have totally failed to find wildebeeste crossing the river all the times I have been to Kenya or Tanzania. However, despite the drama here, there are mixed feelings about any scene like this. You have captured it well, and I for one am envious of the result.

Crocs just have to be the scariest living things on this planet. I hate them and am fascinated by them in equal measure. This is an excellent shot and reinforces all my prejudices nicely.

At least they die fairly quickly in the jaws of crocodiles, not like the water buffalo and the Komodo dragons in Life . A thought provoking scene expertly captured.
