It was a stormy day in the Eastern Sierra...

...and though I was cold to the bone, my soul was soaring!

Lon and Paul were there. too. I don't know if they were as cold as I was, but I know they had a good day at the office, as well!

Oh Man, don't rub it in. LOL... I take it you are fully enjoying retirement. Was this also from the trip a few weeks back?

You know I hear about engineers in my line of work (DoD stuff) who retire and then don't know what to do with themselves. I can't even imagine that seriously. I mean if I can drive and have gas money then why not go out and enjoy it!

Nice photo BTW. I really like fresh snow in the foreground and on the peaks. And the combo of sun and clouds are a nice as well.

Just as a side note now that you have posted both a digital and LF image recently I think there is definately something wierd going on with the way you downsize and save for the web. As I am noticing the same jpeg compression patterns in this image as with the other LF one you posted earlier. This is especially evident in the foreground brush. It looks like something you can experiment with and definately fix for web display purposes.

Preston,

Hey, I remember this! You may have been cold, but what a glorious morning that day with all the snow flurries and dramatic clouds...

I really like this landscape and like the balance in your composition. I sent you my version and it's more of a 50/50 comp and I like this much better. But I have to ask, where's the 4x5 version? I know you were set up with it.

In my note to you I also mentioned about the jpg compression. I'm not sure where it's happening in your workflow, but the last two posted images have the same look and I don't recall ever seeing this in any of your posted images before.

But anyway, I really like this one Preston. I'm sure this will look great in print and I can't wait to see the 4x5.

Oh, Derek, this was on the morning of 10/4, just about 2 hours or so before our meeting at Silver Lake.

I remember seeing this that morning, a thought crossed my mind to stop but I didn't. Sure should have. Hope you whipped out the 4x5 Preston. That clearing was a moment!

Yep, I recall this one too. Unfortunately this is where I first setup and did not like it, and after moving and setting up again the clouds rolled in a shut the entire scene down. :frown:
I suspect you and Lon both got some really nice 4x5's from here. I recall you got a higher look over this area from where you were at.

Hopefully you can both share those at some point in time.

"I suspect you and Lon both got some really nice 4x5's from here."

Well, I suppose I didn't stop down far enough on my shot. I had enough front tilt to bring in the immedite foreground, but the mid-ground is soft; the mountains are fine. At first, I thought my film had buckled a bit in the scanner, but a closer look with a higher power loupe revealed the lack of sharpness. I'm not sure where to go with it, at this point. So, it looks like I'll have to settle for the digi shot or see if a drum scan will produce a sharper image.. Grrr!

In any event. a very dramatic moment!

Man I love the way that desert rolls up into the mountains on the Eastern Sierra. This snow covered scene captures the beauty of the Sierra wonderfully. Is that a little conifer about half way up on the left side? If it is, that might have been interesting to place more prominently in the fg. No nits here... this looks magical top to bottom.
