We will be going live later today with this new feature for NPN members. It's actually a fairly simple modification to the forum software but one we think you'll find useful.
Once activated, you will find a "add photo to gallery" check box on your edit screen (the "edit" link under each of your thumbnails). By checking the box, the photo will NOT be automatically deleted after 35 days and will remain online. You will be permitted to have up to 144 photos checked-off to be added to your gallery. This is in addition to all photos that are not yet 35 days old.
On the thumbnails page, the "All Photos by" link will be changed to "Gallery of" and on the view photo page there will be a new gallery icon at the bottom of the post (next to the currrent icons).
So, as you post new photos that you want to keep online longer than 35 days, you will now be able to do so! You can check the box on the edit screen anytime up until the photo is automatically deleted 35 days after posting. Once you reach the 144 photo limit, you can "uncheck" the box on an older photo to add a new one if you would like.
We hope to make this live later today. As is usally the case, there may be some gremlins that need to be chased, so if you encounter any problems please let us know.
We hope you enjoy this latest benefit of NPN membership!

Jim,
I am looking forward to this new feature, thank you for work so hard to provide it.
Will we be able to upload images to our individual galleries independent of posting to one of the critique galleries?

Lia asked:

No - this is basically a system of saving posted photos for auto-deletion. I think the strategy will be to add those posted photos that you're particularly happy with or wish to leave on permanent display.

Thanks for answering Jim. I have some older photos I would like to have in my gallery that have already been posted previously, that is why I was wondering.

Will this retain the comments that have been made on the photos while it was in the C&C gallery or will those go away after a time limit?

Just clicked on the Gallery button for my work and there were no kinks. Excellent new feature!

Jim,
This is a terrific feature, and in fact it addresses my only real peeve about the site. Glad to see it happen!

Another extremely helpful addition to the site, Jim, and it appears to be working fine. Many thanks for your continued efforts !!

Good to hear this is being well-received!
I'm going to see if we can get "The Nature Photography Gallery of (member name)" placed in the header section of each member gallery page. I think that would be a nice addition.
Also, I'm going to look into allowing members to create a discreet link direct to their gallery, much like we do on PhotoPortfolios. This way, you can send the link to friends, family, etc. that will take them directly to your gallery. I did a mock-up of the header section here.
BTW, we are planning a major overhaul of PhotoPortfolios in early 2010. These new member galleries are in addition to the portfolio feature.

Great addition to the web site! Thanks Jim

Thank you very much for this new feature, Jim.
It also means we can comment on some of the older posts more easily too; especially those more than 35 days old.

Jim, I really appreciate this new feature. That'll help me keep better track of the images that I've posted, as well as being mindful of certain ones I want to keep on the site. Just curious, does this mean that if I want a few images in my gallery which are older than 35 days that they need to be posted again? Thanks a bunch for you efforts, and keep up the good work!

Yes! Best bet would be to re-post those that have already been auto-deleted and check the "my gallery box" before they are deleted again.

Appreciate the response, Jim. I'll bear that in mind. And again thanks for the new feature.

I was wondering what that new little "gallery" icon at the bottom of everyone's posts were for! LOL! Very cool new feature. Thanks to all who work hard to make this site stay great!
Great new feature, Jim, very very useful. I've been away from NPN for a few weeks and I found this as a very welcome surprise!

Great feature, Jim! Thanks for adding it. However, I have a question:
Is there a way to remove photos from your gallery? I have a couple photos in my gallery that were Editor's Picks that I would prefer to NOT have in my gallery but I cannot remove them. Please advise. Thanks!
Posted by Jim Erhardt on November 17, 2009 at 7:18 PM
Phillip, I would have to delete them for the EP gallery. If you want me to do so, let me know!
