Ok, here's my take on it. Very interesting how we all came away with different comps, but I think we all captured a similar mood. I was actually slightly downstream.

I'm actually not really sold on my original capture, so I'm tossing in a crop as well. I have 2 other exposures and was also bummed that I didn't capture the falling snow very well. Although in the original and larger looks you can see the streaking snow in the dark water at the bottom.

Any and all comments appreciated.

I would have to say Lon, that between the three images that you, Preston, and I posted from this same spot, it might almost appear that we were not even close to one another. Each has a slightly different look I think. I do see where you and Preston were honed in on a very similar area comp wise, but even those have their own spin to me.
I really prefer your first image here as it is presented over the cropped one, it works very nicely IMO.

Well, I do think we seem to have accomplished a bit of what we wanted to see with regards to shooting "the same scene", more or less. Kind of a neat experiment to have at least tried anyway.

I just took another quick look at Preston's to see what lens he used, but he did not list it. However, looking at his it almost seems that he might have had his 300 on, but not for sure on that. It might just have been the angle he shot from maybe being a bit closer.

The cropped version is nice.

I like both versions, Lon. However, I would like to see another crop: In your original, crop from the left to eliminate the furthest left vertical tree trunk. I think this would enhance the balance of the composition and pull the snag/rock a toward center.

After seeing yours, and Paul's image of this spot, I can see that I need to bring down the higher values in my image; particularly in the snow. Research continues...

Nice work, Lon!

Love the way you guys used that rock and tree trunks to build a scene around. If it weren't for the fallen tree and dead branches on the left side of the frame, I might prefer the original post. I like the way the cropped version simplifies the image and yet still captures the essence of the scene. Good stuff!

Lon, you make it too hard to decide. They both have a tranquil feel but I'm going to go with the crop's simpleness. My favorite part of the image is the sliver of green in the reflection.
