Following Dan's lead, I went up to Georgetown this morning to shoot bighorn in rut. There was some fairly good flehmen activity and a bit of headbutting, but they were in a pretty bad location for shooting. I photographed these guys before the sun (finally) lit the valley. It's kind of funny to see them lying peacefully when they'll be smashing each other's skulls very soon.
I used a 600mm @ f5.6 - they're all on ~ the same focal plane.

Try having that happen twice in a row! Cool shot, I think the number of animals is perfect.

Nice catch with them all looking in the same direction too. A little quiet time before the games begin!
No full curls, the ends of the horn get broomed off. The ram on the right of this image would be close to full curl - he's a big boy - but his horn is blunt on the ends.
Well, that worked out pretty well, huh? Really cool shot, Dave.

I really like how you captured them in the same direction Dave. I am going tomorrow morning. How far down the raod did you spot them? How high on the mountain were they? (noticed you were using a 600mm)
They were off the frontage road by Georgetown. There are also some around the gas station/Starbucks at Downieville. These particular animals were up the hill quite a bit, but did come down around the time the sun came over the ridge. The problem was that they were all around the city parking lot - not a very photogenic spot. Look for Todd C. and me in a tan 4Runner tomorrow.
