Here's a few shots from Ice Lakes Basin on Thursday night. This one is the lunar alpenglow, the next is sunrise.
Thanks for your comments and critiques!

Super cool! The moon alpenglow is nice, but man, those sunrise clouds kick some serious tail.

I've always wanted to get back up there! Now I don't have too :-)

What Jimmy said.
The sunrise is just spectacular!

Ice Lakes Basin is one of my favorite places in Colorado, but I certainly have not seen it like this. I absolutely love the sunsire version. The clouds are simply beautiful and the ice in the lake adds a lot of visual interest for me. I also really like the twilight version. Makes me want to visit outside of summer - thanks for the inspiration!

These are both outstanding, those clouds in the second are something else.

Both of them are beautiful in a different way. I do like the sunrise clouds the most. Thanks for freezing your butt off to post these.

Rajeev - The hike was surprisingly easy for this time of year. In fact the trail was mostly dry all the way to the lower basin, then only about shin-deep snow up to the upper basin.

Another vote for the super-outstanding #2. I do like #1 as well.

Beautiful shots, Jack. That sunrise had to have been something to witness. I'm surprised the lake isn't frozen solid by now.

Thanks again for your comments.
Here is a photo from soon after the last one, right before the first alpenglow rays. I like the colors in the previous shot better, but this one shows what a sweet sunrise it was!
Great stuff indeed! I'm going back and forth whether I like this shot or the ESS version better. I like the simplicity and the closer view of the reflections in the ESS. But I also really like the sweep of the ridge to the third peak here, and the full tongue shape in the ice on the lake. The wider spread of clouds here gives it a moodier, more brooding look as well. I guess this version has a little more for me.

Beautiful work, Jack. I love the second shot.

Both are outstanding, but that sunrise light detailing the clouds is superb!
Was the road still open all the way to the trailhead, or did you have to hike in from the paved highway? That is one sweet overnight backpack. I would have guessed that deep snow would have made this virtually impossible for mere mortals.

Hi Bill, yes the road was open to the TH, and the trail was mostly dry all the way to the lower basin! After that the snow was only shin deep. The only suffering was provided by the gusty winds all night!

I've already commented on your blog, but I'm finding it very easy to continue to praise these awesome shots. #2 is stunning!
