I'm in need of some suggestions for good photo locations near Vail/Beaver Creek that are accessible near the end of December and don't require a significant hike in. Your thoughts?
There's some cool stuff above Cordillera (Edwards) in the Bellyache Ridge Area. I took a photo workshop up there years ago, near where they run the dog sleds. There's great views of NY Mountain and good aspen forests. You can also XC ski up 23 road to the ridge through great aspen forests.

I've been wanting to get up to the Fang, which is a very scenic frozen waterfall and popular climbing spot in Vail. I think it's a fairly short hike. I don't know the exact location but I'm sure you can find it on the web. Not if the falls will be fully frozen in late December but I think there should at least be a lot of cool ice formations in the area.

I know of some good winter hikes around there but then I read you don't want a hike, so I've got nothin.

Just did a search for the Fang and among the first results were some spectacular shots you took of it...so I'm guessing (just a hunch) that you already know about this location.

Yeah, I've been to the Fang a few times. Jack, the reason that I requested no hikes is because I'm doing a private workshop for someone from out of state and I don't know their hiking capabilities. A shorter hike without a ton of vertical gain may be fine.

The hikes I'm thinking about are pretty strenuous, definitely something more for the experienced winter hiker/skier. Maybe you could cruise around up on Vail Pass? Go to one of those huts up there? You could probably find some sunset vistas of the Gore Range up there with a semi-telephoto lens. Other than that all I can think of are some of the higher areas accessed from the top of the two ski areas. But that gets tricky if you're going for sunrise/sunset. Is Glenwood Canyon too far?
