Jay Cooke SP
This is the St. Louis River flowing through Jay Cooke SP a little south of Duluth, MN. The frigid temp at sunrise had the river covered with constantly moving fog. Longer exposures didn't work because the fog would lose definition. Comments are appreciated.

Canon 40D, 100mm, f16, 1/50. ISO 100, tripod.

I like the mood created by the sun-kissed fog and the overall naturally high contrast of the scene; I find the shutter speed choice to be a total non-problem (i.e. I don't think I ever would have considered it if you hadn't mentioned it).

I personally (I guess that's kind of redundant  ) like this image better without the sky. That's got nothing to do with exposure--I have no issue with the slightly peach-colored sky. My rationale is that, less the sky, the scene seems to take on a much more intimate feel that I find appealing (as well as serving the dual, nit-picking service of removing most of the protruding tree branch in the ULC).

And finally (if the above isn't more than enough), I'm wondering about a conversion of this scene to b/w and/or sepia tone. I'm not 100% convinced that it would work, but it might be worth a look.

Ken, I agree with Kerry about the crop. The image works very well cropped just below the treeline. The mist in the trees serves a bit as the sky, but it is a lot more initmate.

I also concur with the crop suggestion. It is a really dramatic scene with great light. I like this image a lot!

I agree with the crop suggestion, though I like it well enough as is. Great light and motion!

I think you would have a really nice photo if you cropped it to remove the sky and the branch on the left.

Very nice scene. I agree with the others about the sky. My general rule is that if the sky is white (or nearly white) I leave it out. One's eye is always drawn to the brightest area of an image and in this case that's a featureless sky. Cropping out the sky takes a good image and makes it great....IMHO
