Capture NX2 Memory Problem

I started using Capture NX2 a few weeks ago and I really like it. It's a very powerful tool and, for me, is easier to use than PS so I've been using it for most of my processing and editing work. However it's a memory hog. I know I'm on the edge with a 2.2GHz/2MB ram computer (I can't add anymore RAM) but it's been workable - until today. After processing an NEF file I was unable to save the edited file (on which I had performed 5 or 6 steps) because "engine out of memory". I also couldn't open some RAW files because "not enough available memory. So far, if I close Capture and re-start it, I'm able to open and save files again, until the next error message.

I'm using an external hard drive for the cache and temporary files so I've got plenty of space there. This doesn't seem like a RAM or processor speed issue. Is there a setting I need to change in Windows?

One other issue that I've had from the start that is frustrating but not as serious: If I try to do anything under Quick Fix the image goes black so I'm not able to use that feature. I have to click "undo" to get the image back. I also get some sort of "overflow error" whenever I start a new step but I'm able to continue. What would cause that? I've installed the program twice but it still happens.

Thanks for any assistance.

Good morning, I too think NX is great, but have gone to 8 gb of memory. If you save frequently, it should help. It did for me.

Barry

Everything you are describing sounds like to me that you are running out of system resources. You may have quite a few things running in the background you aren't aware of that can be turned off temporarily. I found a { Free } program that on-line gamers use to get every smidgen of system resources they can get out of their computers. I was planning on writing a post about it this weekend with a little testing to see if it makes much difference in processing times, but it sounds like you could use it now.
