I use a Lowepro Nova 3AW and really like it. It is not a backpack, but actually a bag you can sling over-your-shoulder or throw into a larger backpack. It holds my 5dMk2 and two lenses plus 4 batteries, remote, bubble level, and a bunch of filters. If I really wanted to I could put a 3rd lens in the bag as well (with one on the camera). It comes in different colors and you can pick it up at Amazon.com for under $50. You can get smaller sizes too...Overall, I really like the bag.

I use a Tamrac Velocity most of the time. It's a fast action shoulder bag type - not a backpack. I mainly use it for places when I'll mainly just want my camera, a lens or two, and maybe a flash. It won't hold much more than that actually (but does take memory cards, cables, etc.) For those cases I love it. They come in several different sizes, so you can find one to fit exactly what you need it to.
If you're talking about long hikes or wanting to carry a lot more equipment you'd probably want to look at backpack style. Of course, "medium price" is different from person to person too.

John, its actually a gift for my son and he just needs it for protection, just for banging around with.

Tamrac 515 would work well for that. I used to carry my 5D and 17-40 plus a spare battery and card. Nice and compact but protects well.

Hi, I agree with David, my Tamrac Velocity has served well, BUT it's no good for hiking with eg. camera body plus 3 lenses and various gadgets, as all the weight is on one shoulder. It did however really prove useful the other day when I had to wade out into flooded meadows for a photo - so there was nowhere to put the bag down, which I would have had to do with a back pack. Got a Crumpler 'Pyjama Pride' as well now, which apart from the stupid name I really like. One consideration might be can you attach your tripod so you can walk better - ie swing your arms naturally. For smaller the Think Tank belt packs look good - see Ken Rockwell's review.
