Moderators,

Time for a sticky winter thread for winter plans and forecasts, snow and ice shots, and winter skies.

Flurries are predicted for Thanksgiving evening, with accumulations of 3" or so in the southern Appalachian high country, and 6-18" in Virginia/West Virginia.

Of course, we may not get anything.

Good light and good shooting!

Folks,

Winter storm alert for the mountains...

FOR: BLOUNT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

EFFECTIVE: 3:38AM, DECEMBER 4, 2009

EXPIRES: 7:00PM, DECEMBER 5, 2009

...ACCUMULATING SNOW POSSIBLE ON SATURDAY ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS... .A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO MOVE ALONG THE CAROLINA COAST ON SATURDAY...WITH AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE HELPING TO PULL MOISTURE ACROSS THE SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN REGION. AS A RESULT...SOME ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL WILL BE POSSIBLE ON SATURDAY...ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS. THE EXACT PATH AND SPEED OF THE COASTAL LOW WILL ULTIMATELY DETERMINE THE SNOWFALL AMOUNTS...BUT AT THIS TIME...IT APPEARS THAT SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS. ...WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING... A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING. TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF THREE TO SIX INCHES WILL BE POSSIBLE ON SATURDAY...ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. THE SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN AFTER MIDNIGHT TONIGHT...AND CONTINUE UNTIL SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

Man, I'm jealous.

I'll definitely be going up later this winter. . .

We ended up with 2.5 inches here at the house. Earliest measurable snow we've had in many years.

Folks,

6-12" snow predicted for western NC this weekend (18th, 19th).

Snow also predicted for the Cumberland Plateau.

But not much on this side. But I'm packing up the 4x5 and 8x10 just in case.

Here's a good link for road closings in North Carolina. It was on the news today that all of the parkway was closed due to snow, but I don't know how accurate that was.

Randy. Alot of sections of the BRP North of Roanoke are closed and most likely will be for a few days. We've gotten quite a bit of snow up here.

I went the Park this morning and it was closed - all of it except Tremont which had little snow at the water. Foothills Parkway closed too. This 3-season Park thing is beginning to burn my biscuits.

Folks,

Volunteertv.com reports that 32 inches of snow fell on LeConte over the weekend, and 20 inches fell at Newfound Gap.

http://www.volunteertv.com/news/headlines/79828322.html

They also report that most through roads are now open (12/21) except the Newfound Gap Road, which is expected to remain closed through Monday (today).

Made the trip to Boone and Blowing Rock and the Lineville area. The parkway was closed. Also there is so much snow that has been plowed to the sides of the road it make it almost impossible to find a parking spot to get out once you find a subject, The weather was nice and very clear for a good view of the swing bridge with snow on it but finding a good place to pull of again was difficult. Took several images from the church and parking lot of the private golfing community at the base of the Mnt

Latest update on the BRP from the News and Advance.

Weather keeping Blue Ridge Parkway closed
From staff reports
Published: December 22, 2009

Most sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway are closed due to weather, parkway officials announced.

Heavy snowfall along the entire length of the parkway has made travel “not advisable”, according to a news release. Parkway staff is working to open sections but many parts have sufficient snowfall to delay reopening.

Parkway officials also advise the use of “extreme caution” when crossing parkway roads not gated to accommodate private access.

Call the Park Info Line at 828-298-0398 for updated road closure information.

We had 26 inches here in the Max Patch area and no power from Friday until late last night. The roads were impassable until the snow plow came through Monday late afternoon--just too much snow to push through. Quite an adventure and very beautiful! I'll try to post a photo from home once we finish digging out.

Merry Christmas all,

I did the Little River Road from the Sugarlands to the Townsend "Y", and it was sunny and remarkably warm. The rivers were quite high - I suspect from snowmelt as there seemed to be not much left on top of LeConte.

The storm put down a lot of trees especially on the Gatlinburg side. I counted 11 cleared downfalls from the Sugarlands to the Laurel Falls parking lot, 11 more between there and Elkmont, 13 between Elkmont and Metcalf Bottoms, and 7 more to the "Y".

I suspect anyone hiking in the Greenbrier/LeConte/Sugarlands area may have a number of treefalls to deal with. Be careful!
