As of 5 minutes ago I will be heading to canyonlands tomorrow for the long weekend, but don't know exactly where to go. Any recommendations on your favorite shooting spots, and how to get there if they aren't obvious?

Thanks!

Also, I know that mesa Arch is front lit at sunrise, and some prefer to shoot it this way. Is it a sunrise or sunset shot?

Mesa Arch is a sunrise spot. The trick is to catch the glow on the underside of the arch as the sun is breaking the horizon. Don't forget to check out Dead Horse Point SP which is just outside the entrance to Canyonlands. I'm also partial to the views from Green River Overlook.

My favorites if you're headed to Island in the Sky are the False Kiva, Green River Overlook and tight views of the White Rim from the end of the mesa. But I wouldn't say that Island in the Sky is my favorite. I prefer the weird landscapes of the Needles District and the Maze. Going from one area to another involves long drives and the Maze is best visited on its own with plenty of planning.

Also, don't forget that Arches NP is right there too.

Mesa Arch is known for its sunrise glow, definitely a sunrise shot.

Just returned from a trip to Canyonlands last weekend (see thread earlier). Mesa is sunrise as everyone else has pointed out, but be prepared to fight your way in for a spot with the others waiting to witness this spectacle. I was there on a Monday morning and there were 20+ others waiting for the sun to come up-no joke. In addition to False Kiva (unmarked trail between Green River Overlook and Upheaval Dome) and Green River Overlook (which both tend to be sunset spots) I like the Buck Canyon Overlook for sunrise or there is a cliff south of Mesa Arch looking back at the arch with the sun to your back that could be neat and a more unique perspective if you're feeling adventurous? I also highly second Dead Horse Point. Other than Island in the Sky, I have yet to explore, but I'm sure the others will give you plenty of ideas. Also, don't forget to DRESS WARM-it can get pretty frigid up there in the breeze waiting for the sun to come up! Have a great trip!

If you do decide on Mesa Arch for a morning weekend shoot, get there early because choice spots can go fast.

Thanks for the advice guys. Maybe Mesa Arch will not be too bad because everybody will be enjoying turkey!
