Only a Robin, and my first post on here in a while, yet more work getting in the way of photgraphic opportunities!
Any comments on the composition of this would be welcome, and views as to whether the background is too dark/noisy? It was taken on the edge of a wood, so the background is dark forest.

The background is great - the bird stands out really nicely. I love the texture and lichen on the log. I would like to see him a little more to the right. Not sure if there is a blue cast?

I would agree with the comments so far re comp and possibly the colour cast, but feel that the blown area on the chest is not helping either. Eric

Thanks all for your very helpful comments!
I've had another go at this in light of what you've said (and it has prompted me to become a member now, as I really want to get better at this!), so I've adjusted the comp a bit, and tried to sort out the blown highlight. Looking at it again in light of the feedback, it astounds me that I thought it was ok!
Regarding the colour cast, I'm not sure if the sort of blue tinge to the log gives the impression of one, but I've checked it again and all seems as it should be. I haven't messed with the colour in PS at all, but then I'm no expert at that either!

A beautifully detailed Robin, love the pose - and the background is superb. I prefer the first picture - no nits at all. just find it a beautiful composition.

Hi Iain,
Welcome to the asylum!
The comp of the first is fine for me, but the processing of the second is better in IMO, just a little more sharpening as it looks softer than the first. The reflected blue is quite natural on a dark wet log IMO, although quite a few would disagree.
Cheers,
Lewis.

A very good quality portrait. This species is aways a favourite and your image has done it justice.
