Frost Flower
The past couple of mornings have been a bit frosty, but the temps have warmed up pretty nicely this afternoon.

The frost flowers were putting on quite a show this morning, so I looked around for a nice "bloom" to photograph. The best ones seem to grow in fields that have been recently mowed, so the blooms are more compact instead of going a foot or more up the plant stem. Sometime I would like to stay up all night and watch one of these wonders of nature develop.

D2x; 105mm micro nikkor, f/16, 125 sec.

THIS IS SPECTACULAR!! The beauty of this fleeting bloom is equalled only by the mastery of photographic technique that has captured it for posterity! Absolutely stunning art! :toast: :toast:

Nicely done, Bill. This one of the best attempts I've seen of showing the delicate detail of frost flowers.

This is really nice Bill. Very soft background, and a lovely semi-directional light coming from the right. I'm jealous.

Thanks for the nice comments from you guys. I think the most difficult part of this shot was finding the "right" flower to shoot. There are usually plenty to choose from, but only a few seem to have that photogenic quality I'm looking for.

I'm behind on going through posts lately, but wow this is incredible!

What an absolutely beautiful thing that is and beautifully captured, as well! I have never seen a Frost Flower in Ontario.

What conditions need to be present for them to form?

I think they're one of those things that don't happen if you watch

Thanks, Scott and Eleanor. Here's a link to the wikipedia site that gives a good description about how they form.

Wonderful example Bill. It is very rare to see one this detailed and your exposure is perfect.
