40D, 300mm, 1/160 @ f8, ISO100, monopod.
Have had very little time for nature photography this year, so heres one from sunnier days earlier in the year when I did manage to get out. Female Libellula depressa (Broad-bodied Chaser). Rather a 'straight' shot, but one of my favourite dragonflies.
Colours and detail in wings are amazing. The background, although a little busy is diffuse enough for my taste. I get dragged to the abdomen rather than the head either through DoF or the fact that it's brighter.
It's good to have a 'straight' shot in the arsenal - especially one like this.

Hi Greg,
very good shot of a BBC as mentioned the background is not too distracting. It might have been improved if you could have gotten more parallel to it so the head was in as sharp focus as the body.
Not always possible to do though

A very nice image Greg but at first I thought the image was a little too saturated and so I dragged it into PS only to find it looked much better there than here..! So Kudos on a great image of a BBC taking into account nits mentioned.

Strong colours this Greg, and you got the dof just right I reckon as more will introduce too much clutter while less won't get the entire subject inot focus.

I agree with Des, Greg. A very nice shot, and a nice reminder of warmer times.

Hello Greg.
Nice capture and I dont mind the background in this, the only thing I might try and do is the some how lighten the dark area just belowe the dragonfly to make the background even all over.
Try cloning some of the bright green on the right over it at 30% and use a very soft brush.
