Winter's Coming even to our local Mts.
I just wanted to share an amazing place, this was from my first trip to Mt. Baldy ( Mt. San Antonio). By the way they have the oldest ski lifts in California so the ride up is an adventure. I was fortunate enough to arrive at the top after the trees were coated in hoar frost. The winds blow fiercely here on these ridges and have shaped the trees in sometimes beautiful and sometimes grotesque living bonsai. Olympus e-500

The winds also removes the snow in places as you can see in the image.

Nice to see the white against the red trunk. Cool to have this type of scene in your backyard.

awe, well look at that it already got cold enough to stick to the trees!

Paul, your descriptive adventure about the vintage ski lift and the second sentence about fortunate to arrive at the top had me tying the two points together at first glance.
The image shows a perfectly clean and clear view of the Mt. Baldy area here. Your comment about the fierce wind can sure be witnessed in the lower limb full of pine needles in the FG tree too.

Paul, I haven't been on Mt Baldy in many a year, so this brings back lots of memories.

I believe the ice formations on the trees are rime ice. It forms when super-cooled water vapor, driven by wind, impacts an object. It tends to build in layers with lots of air spaces.

Nice image. I like the ice in contrast with the color of the pine's bark.

Looks like you caught just as some of the ice was falling off on the right. Nice catch!

The slopes of Baldy are some of the best/steepest in So. Cal to ski/snowboard after a big dump of snow, but it don't last long facing south. :frown: Try the nearby hike to Cucamonga Peak sometime, if you liked Baldy. Not nearly as many people after the saddle.

Thanks all for your comments . Just for kicks I'll post the other ice fall I was able to capture.

Paul,

Nice catch! Love the crisp, color combo and this stands out nicely especially since the brightness in a mountainess location like this can be overwhelming some times. Maybe it's just me and my monitor, the sky to the right of the trees looks like a very slight hint of green/cyan to me. Probably not even worth mentioning though.

Certainly worth the cable car ride to the top.
