Red Squirrel against Bracken
Thanks for all the comments on my last squirrel image.

Here's another of my recent Squirrel shots from Arran. Didn't get many with a great pose and the weather was really bad at times (hence tufty is a bit damp) but when the sun came out the bracken backdrop really glowed.

1D3 500mm ISO:640 1/250 sec @ f/4.5

Thanks for looking

Simon I am going to have to pop round, good pose & love the BG. Might be tempted to do something with the black branch just above your signature and perhaps (?) a little more selective sharpening.

Would be tempted to skip any ISO between 400-800 and go direct to 800, as there is very little difference, plus f/4 to to help the shutter speed. :wavey:

Nicely posed, another good one, Simon.

Steve, thanks for the comments. This one isn't one of the local lads unfortunately, I rarely get such clean backgrounds with those.

Its interesting to note your view on the ISO, I know that many people say that the standard ISO's of 400, 800 etc offer the best performance, but I've noticed that 640 seems better than 800 under certain conditions (at least on my camera). I was also at close range with this one so tried to eek out a touch more DOF with f/4.5, at least to get the feet and log in focus.

Simon, if it works for you then that is all that matters :wavey:

As we both have the same camera with perhaps a few 'tweaks' to our CF's to suit our requirements it's always interesting to see peoples view points.

I agree with the comment about the twig close to the signature. Apart from that, a very nice post.

This is lovely - the b.ground is particularly fine. Might I suggest a bold crop? I'd do it if it were my image - crop to the tip of - or just above - the branch on the left, which, for me, throws much more emphasis on to the squirrel and the superb background. Very nice image.
