Hello all! I've made a few comments on NPN over the last few months and thought I'd better pull my finger out and start posting. I'm starting with something a little different from somewhere very familiar though there is a very good chance that I'll make a pigs ear of it so bear with me!
Yes I've just realised that it needs a border, told you I'd make a mess of it!!

Hi Andrew
I like this and I think a border would loose the effect. Just clone out the chopped birds (about 3 I think) and you have a really interesting shot in my opinion.. very different,
Cheers

Very different shot and a special feel to it but i agree with John's comment on cloning out the clipped ones.

Hello big guy!!!
First of all WELCOME wavey: Glad you're taking the plunge.
Great shot to start with. Indeed it needs a border but the image is great. Very different and I'm sure that's just the way you want it to be. Hope to see more soon
Thanks for your comments guys. This is a bit of a tricky one for me because part of this images appeal to me is that it has a slightly 'unreal' quality to it, I was half expecting someone to ask me if I had digitally manipulated it/created it. Obviously cloning the clipped birds out would tidy it up but for me I feel that it would be just a step too far and an image that already looks odd would then start to look downright suspicious. I do greatly appreciate your feedback though, it is why I've joined the forum
Hey Ed
Cheers for the welcome my friend, I hope you're ready for my unique brand of butal honesty, I'm looking forward to critiquing a few more of the rotund ones' images!

Andy
Nice one! You're right there's a surreal quality to this thats really engaging.
I love the pattern the birds have created, some in focus, other not,, and the white background is just superb. The best thing is you could not fake this - any amount of fannying about in Pshop would get nowhere near the composition that nature can provide.
I like the clipped birds - they hint at there being a lot more action going on outside the frame and the tension they provide is vital to the success of this image. imho.
"Brutal honesty" - some o us here ur Scoattish so we dinnae mind anything brutal - just gies plentae o it, right wee man, the more brutal the better........and gies plenty o kickin when wur doon too, its mair fun right.

Wotcha! Nice to see you take tyhe plunge - what with posting here, getting a website and joining a blog you're becoming less reclusive by the minute!!
Nice creative first post too - but you know I like this one anyway!!
Look forward to some AP humour on here - but I'm off to Bosque next week so it'll have to wait on my part. I'll catch up/ring when I'm back.

Bloody Hell!!!! thats really lowered the tone on this forum now, as I work with you on most of the subjects/projects that we do together my only means of escape was this forum and now that you have joined well I might start to reconsider. I am looking forward to the AP banter and if you are too brutal with me you can *&^$ *&f just make sure you give that big dutch B%$£&D some as well
On a more serious note this is one of the best Red Kite shots that I have ever seen but please don't let it go to your head. Don't you dare clone anything out.
Welcome to the forum Andrew
very good idea for a starter post

Hang on a minute, where did you pop up from?
Have you got any good ones to show?
No, you know I like this. Look forward to your innovative style and brutal honesty. I'm sure you'll soon get sick of the polite tone you've adopted thus far!
Hi all
Thank you kindly for such a warm, humorous and occasionally sarcastic welcome, it is greatly appreciated so I will always endeavour to be on my best behaviour! honest!
Cheers

Andrew
As a matter of interest -is this a crop at all. ? or did you chop the outside birds on purpose ?
JohnR
Hi John
Thanks for the question. The only place that I have cropped the image from is a slither off the top and the left hand side. By doing this I was able to remove 2 other 'kite bits' and tighten the image a little. As for what I was trying to achieve compositionally I could see that the snow on the ground was illuminating the kites from below whilst the overcast sky provided a nice, monochromatic backdrop. All I was trying to do was pick up tight groups of kites to show the congregation but I would certainly prefer it if there weren't bits of kites creeping in on a few of the edges. Removing them however, as I mentioned before, for me personally would be an alteration too far that I feel would compromise the integrity of the image. Thanks again John for taking an interest.
Cheers

Thanks Andy
The reason I asked was that I was once accused of manipulating an image by cropping which they said was just another computer photo enhancement tool along with all the others !

Hi John
I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, as is the guy/lady who accused you of manipulating an image by cropping it though I would have to politely disagree with him/her. Such differing opinions all contribute to the rich tapestry I guess!

I think this is a fantastic image: everything, everywhere. It's like piranhas in the sky. Or a very difficult where's wally? :-)
I expect a border might be useful for some purposes but for effect it's good as it is. I can't fault it otherwise. Very inspiring.
Cheers,
Chris
