One of the landscape photographers posting on this site gets great images using a Singh ray polarizer and color enhancing combo filter on her DSLR. Those things are expensive, but worth the outcome IMO.
Question: I find polarizers essential for landscape photography, but is a color enhancing filter necessary, given the enhancing capabilities using Photoshop and various plugins?
It depends on how you feel about post processing time and effort. I use the Singh Ray enhancing filter as a "bracket" sometimes, but in truth I seldom like the results enough to resist further adjustment in post. I used it, as well as cc gels in the days of film, but in concert with a Minolta color meter. About the only time I use the color meter and cc gels these days is on commercial/industrial/location shoots with mixed light sources. Those shoots almost always preclude post processing, so it's important to get the light right at the time of capture.
If I didn't already own the enhancing filter, I probably wouldn't buy one. Nature photography almost never requires a handoff of files directly from the camera like my pro shooting.
