Metadata in Images? Keywords?

Hi,

I am a self-taught photographer taking classes when I can. I have a few questions that I have not been able to find an answer to and am hoping I can here. (usually, that's the case- you guys are great!)

What is Metadata? How does it go into an image? Can I do this in windows? Is this part of the menu that shows up when you right click on an image then go to Properties?

And how do you put keywords in images?

Thank you very much for your help, advice and opinions.

Metadata is "data about data". IOW, it is information about an image some of which the camera inserts (settings, lens and camera model, date, etc) and some of which you can enter, such as location, your contact information, copyright info.
Metadata is attached to the image by the camera and also by you if you decide to insert it.
You can insert metadata information via most of the computer programs used for processing or cataloging your photos such as Adobe Bridge, Lightroom, Aperture, iView or Expression Media, plus MANY others.
You put keywords into the image file from the processing or cataloging programs as well.
You should be sure to read the DAM Book (digital asset management) by Peter Krogh before starting any of this and give your organization of keywords and images deep thought before starting on an organizational strategy so that you don't have to REDO the entire thing after a year or so.
Good luck.

Hi Grace,

Thank you. That's what I want to do is AVOID a REDO later so before I start organizing thought I'd ask. I'll check the book out.

Thanks again.

Hi Allen,
Are you using any software for asset management. Adobe Bridge, Lightroom, etc.?

Hi Neil,

Currently, I use HP Imaging to download from my camera to computer. I own Lightroom and Photoshop, but since I currently shoot in jpg (which will be changing soon), I haven't used it much.
