Wall Street Trees
Well, this digital image isn't from California, its along "Wall Street" near Moab. It was taken a few weeks ago. I really like this image, but I'm wondering about a couple of issues. Is the light too harsh for this setting? Is the climbing gear on the rock face too distracting? Seems like I've been really only posting tree images lately. Does this image work for you? All comments much appreciated. Best Regards.

Hi Michael, I can't find the climbing gear so I guess it doesn't distract me! With that said, this looks like an image that would really sing in the right light, but as is, it's a bit to harsh for me.

Michael,

To be honest, Michael, this doesn't work well for me. I think it would have been better as a vertical, and the light seems very flat. I prefer your other work to this one.

Darn climbers! I can't see the gear in this presentation, but it would likely show in a larger size. If you decide to work this image more, you could always carefully clone out the offending gear.

Hello Michael,

I've strained to find climbing gear and can't see it--so no on that point. The light here is pretty flat resulting in a lack of enough contrast to make the tree really stand out.

Hi Michael,

I like what you saw and tried to capture. I don't think the light is too harsh, but I do think the light isn't all that favorable. I think what is happening is that there isn't enough separation between the tree and the background cliffs. This is especially visible around the outer edges of the branches on the top and right; they simply blend too much with the background. I'm not quite sure how this could be remedied in processing except perhaps bumping up the saturation of the cliffs to create some separation from the lights of the bare tree.

I like the view, just wish the tree didn't merge so much with the Wall.

And I can't see the climbing gear either...

I don't see any rock climbing gear in this web version, so that doesn't bother me. At first I was a little ambivalent about that branch in the LLC, but I don't think any crop would make it better. I might try pushing the blacks and midtones around the tree area to make that area standout a little more. That's about all I can think of.

I can't add much to what's been said - I agree with Lon. Either you need separation between the tree and the wall, or it needs to blend in very deliberately.
