Sunrise/Sunset views close to Asheville?

Hey all,

I have a dilemma. I have seen some pretty spectacular sunsets in the last few weeks, but I have yet to find a good location in or near Asheville that I can get to within half an hour. I would typically go up on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but the last couple times it has been closed. I admit, I haven't researched this a lot yet so I thought I would start here, by polling the most knowledgeable people I know .

Does anyone have suggestions for good sunrise/sunset locations that I can get to quickly from Asheville (ideally South Asheville where I work)?

Thanks!

Hey Joseph
I don't know if this is what you're looking for but I found Tomahawk Lake in Black Mountain to be nice for sunrise. The trick is to catch it with good clouds and the sunlight hitting the mountains to the west across the lake. This is a city park so you have to deal with some buildings but there is a great walking path all the way around the lake so you can easily shoot in any direction. Plus, it's not too far from Asheville.

I'll post two photos from sunrise in the fall.

Here's a second shot that shows the sunlight hitting the mountains. You may have to work to find an angle where the building does not show.

It's further than your 30 minute goal, but DuPont State Forest may have some great sunset opportunities, plus it's not far from Looking Glass Falls.

Max Patch is probably more like an hour to an hour and 15 minutes, but it's a lovely place for sunrises and sunsets. However I'm not sure if the I-40 rockslide is affecting the route there or not.

Head down the Parkway to Black Balsam Knob - It's in the area of the Graveyards. The sunsets are great & there are some neat rock features that make a great foreground. Sunrises could have good potential as well, but I've not been up there for those. Richard Bernabe showed me this spot.
