I'm pleased to share with you all, a photo of Indian Elephant tossing young one, which has won 'Highly Honored Winner' in Natures Best photography competition, 2009.
The small group of elephants was enjoying a good time in the Ramganga river. This pair was last to come out of the river. As the two were moving on the riverbed, the female, without any sign of provocation, suddenly got mad at the young one. She tossed the calf violently and squeezed him so that the calf actually turned red under the pressure.
I was shooting with 500 mm F 4.5 lens with 1.4x tele-converter,
focusing manually, and captured the action because they were already
in the frame and focused, otherwise it was so shocking that I was
bound to have missed it. The very next moment, another female came to the rescue and then both the females were seen comforting the young one. I found this behavior bizarre and just don’t know what prompted this behavior.
Actually I had four pictures in the final round, so was just hoping for the big kill, but that was not to be. This happens to be my 3rd win in this competition after 2005 & 2007.
Thankyou so much for your kind attention & views!
