Instead of standing there freezing my tail off watching Floris take starry night pictures, I thought I'd dig my camera back out and try my hand at some images myself, nearby in the Alabama Hills. Thanks for the inspiration Floris.

Very nice indeed, Eric. I like the placement of the lenticular cloud coming in from the URHC and the granite boulder in the LLHC with the small sky gap in-between.
I do see a lot of small white spots in the sky, I think I might clone those out.
I do not think the horizon is tilted here. That angle of the sierra range in the BG jets off from Lone Pine Peak towards the Owens Dry lake and the altitude drop is quite severe, hence the look of tilt IMO.

Good decision. This is an excellent photograph. I guess it's better to take pictures while freezing your tail off, instead of just freezing your tail off. Great image.

Benjamin, I think there might actually be a slight tilt, just looking at the horizontal cloud bands near the bottom as a reference. Although there is also a perceived tilt just by the way the bg mountains vanish of into the distance. Nice catch!

Eric, I like the glow on the bottom of the clouds.
The patterns on the rock really make it work. It's almost like a petroglyph of a jet.

Actually if I don't miss my guess judging from the hue of the bg mountains I believe thats the Inyo Mts so this image would have been taken looking north. The rock in the fg and the unusual lightening bolt pattern on it combined with the sky make this a really excellent image. How far behind you did the clouds continue? While lenticular and slightly stacked this is probably a Sierra wave event. Freezing your buns off is often the price you have to pay to get that amazing image. We were lucky last Monday morning, while cold there was no wind it was almost calm, another rare event in the Alabamas. The image is spotted but i think that's easy enough to fix.

I really like this, Eric. The patterns and color in the granite are really nice and you gotta love those clouds.
