One of these fleeting moments you sometimes encounter. This lone birch was catching the low rays of winter sun spilling over a ridge. The landscape surrounding the tree is not sunlit but is in the shade and therefore illuminated only by the light from the blue sky, hence the cool blue colour cast. This cooler tone contrasts with the warmer direct sunlight on the frosted birch. Some of the light reflected downwards by the tree's branches is illuminating the ground directly below the tree. One of the biggest hurdles to overcome in doing these types of shot is our brain's uncanny ability to filter out the colour casts so such scenes look 'normal'.

Lovely spot and shot John.
The hurdle is in the processing where the instincts to reach for the colour balancing dropper need overcoming too!!
Wish we had more proper winter in the Midlands but I can't complain!!
Hey John
Absolutely stunning and I echo Mark's comments about Midland winters, very envious indeed. I particularly like the ground beneath the tree that is coloured by reflected light from the actual tree, it's one of those where the more you look the more you see. Beautiful and it would seem beautifully processed
