Looks like the people who make the Spot personal tracking device are trying to clear out their stock of the version 1 device (the new version is smaller with more capabilities), so you can now go to http://www.findmespot.com/en/ and buy it for $100, and get a $50 rebate. In other words, version 1 Spots now cost just $50. That's a heckuva deal! This applies to online purchases, or stores that stock it, like Big 5, although I did notice Big 5's rebate offer ends Christmas Eve, whereas on the Spot site it's good through New Year's Eve.
In case you don't already know, you do need to buy into their subscription service to make it work, but it's still a worthy device.

And if you activate your subscription by 01/15/2010 you get one year of SpotAssist Roadside Assistance for free, a $30 value.

Lol! Thanks for the update Todd. The Spot is on my wish list so this deal makes it a lot sweeter

I wound up getting the Fast Find GPS Personal Locator Beacon. It cost $300 but there's no subscription fees, so I figure in the long run I'm saving a lot over the $100/year fees for the Spot.

If you end up picking up Spot, I HIGHLY recommend the tracking feature for an additional $50.00. The tracking feature sends out location cordinates every 10 minutes. Anyone following you can just look you up on the Google Topos provided by Spot and see or watch your where-abouts. Otherwise, you need to manually press the button to send OK signals.
I attach Spot to my pack, activate the tracking, and never go back to it, and complety forget about it for the rest of the day. My wife can watch me and track me whenever she wants. Not whenever I want, by taking pack off and pressing the "OK' button and hoping a signal gets out. The tracking feature is what makes this thing a "must have."

I completely agree with Kane! That is what I do and I'm thrilled with it, so is my wife!

Kane or Erik,
Is the tracking feature in the yearly package you purchase or incorperated in the device itself. Can I get the tracking feature in the old Spot I or do I need the Spot II?

Joe, you can get it with either version. It is an optional part of the yearly package.
