Barn Owl(Tyto alba)
D300S + 600mm AFS II f4D. + 1.4 Conv.
1/80 @ f6.3.
ISO: 320.
Ex Comp 0.EV.
WB: Auto.

The snow is all well and good but the poor old birds are starting to suffer. This Owl momentarily dropped on to this post to allow me about five frames then it continued its journey quatering the surrounding land on the airfield.

Nice work Major, I was in Norfolk today and saw 9 Barn Owls, all working very hard to find the next meal. Hopefully they will all make it and the poxy white stuff will soon go...

On another note, what the hell are those roads about, are there no gritters or snow ploughs in Norfolk? I'd want my council tax money back

Excellent capture..

Superb shot Major.

The Owls suffer in the snow and wind at this time of year. Lets hope we get some decent days in between the snow.

Just beautiful! I wish we had some around here in daylight. Could it do with a little rotation?

Beautiful image, detail is stunning and over the last 3 days/nights I've seen Barn Owls hunting over roads, motorways, and coming further into built-up area's something I have'nt seen before, desperate to find food,at 2 locations I've been waiting at this week no sightings which tell's me things are bad ,cannot image how they are going on where you are Major,A lovely portrait image though to remind us how beautiful these birds are,Merry Christmas to you   :wavey:

Hi Major,

Lovely shot! I agree a little anti-clockwise rotation may help and I can see a halo around the top and back of the head on my screen, but may be just me as nobody else has mentioned it.

Cheers,

Lewis.

Super image Major. Nice to get a snowy image, but I do hope it clear soon for them.

Great shot, we get pigeons and (if we are lucky) kestrels on posts like this. Barn owls - no way. A superb shot, Major, up to your usual high standard.

Hello Major.

A little rotation for me to please but other than that a beautiful image with a nice wintery feel to it.

Many thanks all. On the question of rotation I think if the post wasn't covered in snow at the top you probably wouldnt say it needs it. The bird itself is more or less parallel with the sides of the frame. The snow has been blown over the top of the post and as a result is deeper on the leading edge than at the back. the post is also one that curves over at the top and as a result does tend to make things look slightly wonky. The post itself is not dead flat at the top. Hope that helps. Anyway thats my excuse.
On the second note I would like to wish everybody on this forum a very happy Christmas and I hope you all get some time of to continue taking great images. All the best. :wavey:

Difficult to say if any rotation is needed (no reflection  ) and I think in this case its down to how you saw the image as you took it, so this is prob correct...

Its a really nice Barn Owl image, one I would love to have on my files... I too however see the halo, some selective work to the bg perhaps...

Seasons greatings to you too....

No selective work carried our PhilH.. All it is is me doing one round of smart sharpening followed by one round of unsharp mask at an extreme setting to add contrast. If I had selectively sharpened the subject you would not have seen any halo at all. It is of my opinion that halos are usually down to the processing and for me bare no effect when it actually comes to printing an image or supplying an agency as you woldnt normally be supplying a sharpened image anyway.
