If you're still looking for just the right gift for a youngster, have I got a great suggestion: Get them a pocket digital camera! Nothing fancy, and it doesn't have to cost even $100 to delight.
We're vacationing at the moment with family, and I loaned our 10-year old granddaughter my own. She took off like a rocket!
I didn't complicate instructions with more than how to turn it on and off, then zoom the lens. Turns out that was just right, and she's been exploring with the camera every day, to the tune of more than 200 images/day!
Part of the "deal" has been the slide shows she presents to us each evening on my laptop. She really revels in talking about what she sees and why she took each shot. It's the most engaged I've seen her so far this trip.
We had already purchased gifts for her, but in order to retrieve my own camera before departure, we've put one of her own under the tree. I'm as excited about Christmas as she is!

She'll have a great Xmas and her memories of sharing her photos with you and family will last a lifetime! I bet she'll take slews of Xmas shots and send them to you!!! Enjoy your holidays with your family!

Yes, I do agree, my son loves to go out with me, and to have the pictures later in book form. So we are giving him a little digital camera that was less than 45.00, I will also only provide minimal instruction. the best is with less. He is only 41/2 and has autism, I am so looking forward to seeing what he sees. great post.

Soooo cool, Hank! Wow, it's great fun to see kids get so excited and involved with something that invites them to participate in their (our) world. What memories she will have of this Christmas and her special involvement with you and the family and her storytelling. I hope someone is recording all this?
