Harris Brake is located in Perry County south of Morrilton Arkansas on Hwy 9. The lake was lowered several months ago and remains low today. I had heard that there is a log jammed in one of the gates. If anyone likes to photograph sunken trees (stumps), here's your chance.
The wind was vibrating my tripod/camera and ruined my plans. I had planned to merge several images together as the sun would dip in/out of the clouds. This was about the only decent image I came away with and was cropped to pano.
This is with my(our) Christmas presents- new tripod head (Cullmann High Load Magnesit Ball Head 35) and used Nikon 50mm F1.4 from the eighties. The 50mm F1.4 looks good with stars in the limited test that we did over the weekend. I look forward to playing with the stars with this lens.
congrats on the new stuff. Those 50 f1.4's are fun and great for wedding and portraits and such if Karla ever wants to re-enter that dark side of photography. I have been sort of looking at some Pentax 50mm f1.2's, I don't really know what I would need it for though. Maybe it is just a guy thing wanting to have fun toys to play with. A Pentax 16-45 would actually benefit me much more.
BTW nice light in the shot

I use that 50mm 1.4 Nikkor on my Canon pretty often. It can work ok for stars because of the 1.4, but it's not very wide and you may only be able to get 8 second exposures or so for pinpoint stars. It's a sharp lens though!
Nice stumps!

It did fine on the star test. I just didn't have any subjects to frame up with. Yes, the 50mm is not wide enough, but will have to do until I have the money for 28mm F1.4 or perhaps the 14-24 F2.8.
Just sell the Jeep and buy an awesome lens and a cool scooter to get around town. Problem solved.

This is a three shot merged together. A narrow band of sunshine (30yards wide) was sliding across the stumps. I layered them all together for this final image. Two of the photos had shifted ever so slightly and I couldn't get them to alligne properly. It doesn't seem so bad in this wide view.
That's a bunch of stumps.

Thanks for sharing the info on Harris Brake. Both images are nice.

Looks like there ought to be some crappie hanging out around those stumps somewhere...and maybe a good place to find some waterfowl? I'll bet the fishermen don't have to worry too much about jet skis

I wouldn't try a jet ski in there now that I know what is under me. It's supposed to be a good crappie lake and no waterfowl hunting allowed on the lake, only below the dam in the WMA.
My great grandparents lived on Harris Brake. I can remember the lake being frozen over and being pushed around on it in a milk crate when i was a small kid. All of those stumps were trees not too long ago, i can remember shooting a pistol across the lake and not being able to miss a tree there were so many. The crappie fishing used to be pretty good, we could go out for a few hours and have enough to feed 20 people, not sure how good it is now though.
Jon, that sounds like a lot of fun sledding around on the lake. It's pretty low right now. Those stumps are usually just inches out of the water. I need to try crappie fishing over there sometime.
