Are you using IE 6, 7 or 8 on Windows? I'd really appreciate your feedback on my in-progress home page reformatting ...

http://jessespeer.com/2009/

Specifically, if you are seeing any displacement in the layout ... due to my amateur css skills. IE usually handles things "a bit differently" - especially across versions - and online rendering engines don't always catch errors. Thanks for any help! Please post/email your feedback.

In fact, if you see any errors in any browser, I'd love to hear about them.

Check out Browser Lab to see how the browsers will act for more testing options as well.

I did get a script error for IE6/Win XP on one computer. For FF 3.5/Mac no problems at all.

Hey Jesse,

The site looks sweet!

When I don't have my PC handy, I use these links for testing. You can't really test functionality, but you can at least see if the layouts are correct.

Edit - nevermind, I just read your full post and see that you already know of the rendering preview sites.

Jesse,

I can view the homepage with IE8, however none of the links appear to work. Also, I get this little yield sign and a message that says:

Webpage error details

I have no clue as to what that means!

Looks like it is getting hung up in IE7 too...

I am using IE7 and did not get any of the errors mentioned above. Quite a beautiful selection of photos, too!

Cool. Thanks guys. I was afraid of seeing JS errors in IE. That helps, although I have no clue how to fix it.

(Yeah, page links are not active yet.)

Adobe's BrowserLab is really nice ... hadn't seen that one. Thanks Neil.

Site looks great in FF and Chrome, but IE 7 is suffering. Notice where the scrollbar is and where the images start appearing (and there's only a couple of them showing). The menu is fine though. Not sure how to fix it though, but I hope this helps.

Jesse, it works fine on my PC using IE 8. However, your website has caused a keyboard malfunction though because of my excessive drool. Stunning doesn't begin to describe it. I love it!
Posted by John Mumaw on December 30, 2009 at 2:57 PM
Using IE 7 at work, I get the same background as Jon's screenshot shows, but no image.
'Error on page' notice appears with the same details as Michael noted.
I can see the menus on the left, but the links don't work.
The 'Introduction' link on the top right does work, though.
You may want to capitalize the 'M' in 'montana photographer'.

Jesse.... your design is always fresh, unique!! This new change is wonderful..really shows off your work. Since I switched to Firefox long time ago, I just has IE6 ... it looks great on it..no errors. Great job Jesse.... :toast:

I got the same error message as Jack in IE8. The web site looks fine and seems to work okay, though. Intro link works and I know the other links aren't active. When I had IE 6 & 7, I had a lot more problems viewing sites like this and this seems to be the case with others here.

Drool? Goal achieved.

I believe I have solved the positioning issue for IE7. Yes?

On to the JS error ...

Thanks again everyone.
Posted by Jon LaBass on December 30, 2009 at 4:04 PM
Yes, the IE7 positioning issue is solved, but one small thing is the scrollbar is present so I can scroll to the right to see all of the pictures instead of clicking on them to use your fancy image scrolling. This behavior is not in FF or Chrome (and I don't know about any other versions of IE) so I don't know if you want that solved, too, or not.

People still use IE?

Look forward to seeing your new site.
Posted by Jesse Speer on December 30, 2009 at 4:36 PM
Thanks Jon. Can I email you directly - to have you check this scroll bar issue as I tweak it? Added an "overflow:hidden" tag to HTML (in addition to BODY), which I hope fixes that. info a t jessespeer.com

Yeah, a lot of people use IE ...

Wow, I actually thought it would be a lot more people using IE than that. Glad to see people are moving away from it.

For me it's looking generally good on IE8, but as soon as I click on the photos, "the photography of jesse speer : introduction" text disappears, and the line of photos jumps a few pixels up the screen. It doesn't go back to the way it started until I click on one of the menu links.

Love the design! It's working nice and fast, and I have much more patience to scroll through these images with my own clicks than to sit through an introductory slideshow.
Posted by Jesse Speer on December 30, 2009 at 5:18 PM
Thanks Jackson. I'm working on getting the "introduction" line fixed in the upper right corner for all browsers. I've been playing with various settings, so you might have jumped in during a bad CSS choice.

I appreciate the speed note ... it's why I'm using this javascript setup instead of Flash for the home page.
Posted by John Mumaw on December 30, 2009 at 5:56 PM
Now at home with IE8.
Can see the images and the 'Introduction' works fine. Links still don't work.
Clicking on the images to scroll is working, but it's a bit jerky and the images on the right side of the screen end in the center of an image (not an issue on the left side of the scroll).
Posted by Jesse Speer on December 30, 2009 at 6:09 PM
Not a big fan of Microsoft today.

John, the site links are indeed inactive. And just to clarify, you can see all photos ... the final snowy aspen branch isn't cut off? Yeah, the rightmost photo will often be clipped, as I can't account for variable window widths. The jerky part is throwing me for a loop.

I may email some of you IE users off thread to continue troubleshooting these IE woes. Thanks!

And just to clarify, you can see all photos ... the final snowy aspen branch isn't cut off?

Yes, I can see all of the photos, and the last one is not cut off.

just saw Jack's note- disregard mine. :)

I've been at a loss for years as to how MS does the math on; refusal to follow web standards = good.

That said, I was all prepared to check it out in FF/Opera/Chrome, but the link seems dead.
Posted by Jesse Speer on December 31, 2009 at 12:56 PM
My ISP quit on me last night - in the middle of uploading this page, of course. Fixed, Kurt. I don't know whether to thank MS or laugh at them, for letting me insert IE7 emulation in my code.

I seem to have all layout and performance issues solved, thanks to many here.

If anyone reading this has JS experience, I'd love to talk to you about a particular script I'm using (and the error I can't figure out). Hired help of course.

I can tell you in FF 3.5.6, clicking photo three very rarely (possibly never, I can't recall) causes the scroll to happen. The tooltip for it is on and off like crazy as well (moving the mouse around the photo). Clicking like a madman on all the others seems to work just fine.. so it's just that one.

I found it rather confusing that I couldn't click 'leftwards' to go 'back', I could only go forward and use the last photo to get back. However, I understand the reasoning from a usability/scripting perspective - it would probably be a nightmare to implement it otherwise.

The tooltips over the nav bar drive me nuts. But that's just one mans opinion

Other than that, I really enjoy the overall design and layout. Great job.
