Had a quick trip to Gigrin today after Chris called to say there was snow on the ground.

I really like this shot, as it emphasises what these birds have to endure to survive.

A beautiful composition although I don't think they endure much hardship if they "live" at Gigrin!
However I agree with the sentiments expressed.

Hi Kim,
I agree to a certain extent, however, if it wasn't for the work done at Gigrin these birds wouldn't be as well on the road to recovery as they are today. The Kites are spreading out now and I have seen wild Kites in Hampshire that started out from Gigrin stock.

Great shot and very atmospheric .
Off forum rules but I doubt if that number of birds would survive on road kill alone ,along with competion from corvids etc, if Gigrin went bust !! Think about it.
Cheers

Nice shot Rob. Would make a "different" Christmas card from the usual Robin

Love the atmosphere captured, and the detail in the kite/eye is very good with the falling snow,I like the bird flying out of the frame too very different.Happy new year
Gutted, I was there the day before as 4 days of heavy snow was forecast but on the first day all I got was heavy rain, not so good! Vonvinced that the weather numpties had got it wrong again I left and it looks like I missed some fab conditions. I echo Jeroen's point about the comp but otherwise well executed in difficult conditions
Cheers

Good shot with nice detail in the wings, taken in difficult shooting conditions. Agree with Jeroen that it would have been a real stunner with the Kite flying towards, or across, the camera but that's life ........ Cliff

What we would like and what we get can differ a great deal, but this is still a very good shot works for me.
Cracking shot, made extra special by the snow. In fact, I'd have probably gone there myself if my 40D hadn't been away for yet another repair.
Out of interest, how do you find find the 7D for birds in flight shots? I may buy one soon. Cheers.

Snow adds lovely atmosphere.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I do agree that it would be better flying towards me
Jeremy, the 7d is pretty good for this type of condition. I used to use a 1dIIn and I was with people shooting 1d and 1ds II's. I seem to have got the best keeper rate out of 4 of us. I was using the 7d with my 100-400mm handheld and with my 500mm tripod mounted. Using center point expanded for backgrounds like the shot here and zone for sky shots.

A good image to end the year on.
Don't like it flying away, but that's not to say it kills the shot.
