Something different from Uganda
Hi all...

I know black and white is not to everyone's taste, particularly of subjects which are normally seen in colour, but this just happens to be a sentimental favourite of mine.

We were in Uganda in 2008 and visited the mountain gorillas while we were there. We've been back a few times since, because it's something that won't ever be forgotten :)

This is the silverback of the Nkuringo group who died of old age during 2009.

Nikon D300 and 70-200 VR at 200mm, 1/125, f3.3 and ISO 560

Happy new year

Hi David

It's a great image and perfect use of b/w. What I like is that you see a beautiful image, you then learn of what happened to him and when you look again you start to notice his age. A poignant and beautiful image, love it

I like the expression on this David, but I'm no fan of artificial vignetting. I'd be inclined to crop closer on the subject and lose the BG if you find it distracting. I'd love to visit the location one day as you said, their habitats are fast diminishing.

Happy new year to you too.

This is a lovely image David. There's a quick pleasure to be gained from a cursory glance, but this is an image that really rewards a longer look. The darkened eyes are really poignant and the diagonal pose is very strong. The b&w treatment works well, and adds another dimension to the image.

Black and white suits the subject really well, although personally I would like to see a little more detail in the eyes. You obviously did better than I did, on the day I went the gorillas decided on a route march and we spent our hour running up and down mountains!
