Saw this at some distance out in the Intracoastal Waterway (Isle of Hope, Savannah, GA). The image quality sucks, but it should be enough for an ID. My call is a juvenile Black Scoter (female?) but I am nowhere near positive.

Common Loon, winter plumage :-)

Mia, is correct. Common loon, winter plumage. We get a couple hundred if not more wintering on the Indian River Lagoon by my home each winter. Unfortunately, they do not call much during winter. I long to hear them again as I did in the summers up in northern Wisconsin when I lived there. It is always nice to see them here in the winter though.
Huh. Never thought about loons. I thought only Yankees had them! Turns out Sibley agrees with you, although they are strictly a coastal species in these parts. The first I believe that I have ever seen.

Philip,
We get them in coastal FL in the winter, as Ron mentioned though I've never heard one call in FL. I am hoping to hear some this coming summer
